Yeah… but probably not in the way you think.

There’s a bit of confusion out there about how credit scores work in New Zealand — and fair enough, it’s not exactly crystal clear. A lot of people think you need to take out a credit card or personal loan to even have a score. Not true.

Here’s the deal:

Every time you apply for credit (even just a phone plan or a store card), you’re getting credit-checked — and too many checks can actually hurt your score. So getting a credit card “just to build a score” can sometimes do more harm than good.

A credit check shows lenders what other debts you’ve got on the go — and more importantly, if you’ve had any defaults or missed payments in recent years. That stuff can make borrowing harder, but it’s not always a deal-breaker.

At Hello Yello, we work with you upfront to understand where things stand — so we can match you with the right lender first time. Fewer credit checks, better results. And if things are a bit messy? No judgement. We’ll help find a short-term solution or build a long-term plan to get you back on track and in front of the banks again.

Whether your credit score’s clean as a whistle or a little rough around the edges — we’re here to help you make it happen.
